I spent a frustrating hour today trying to find a simple Tetris game for Windows XP for my girlfriend. Is there a single simple XP-styled Tetris game out there that's pretty cheap or free? Even with the wondrous Google, it's still surprisingly hard to find things like this.

Not for XP, but worthy of mention here nonetheless: Quinn, described as:

Quinn is an implementation of the popular arcade game Tetris, written specifically for Mac OS X. It features a neat user interface, perfectly integrated with Aqua, and a smooth look and feel for best user enjoyment. The goal was not to reinvent the game with yet another modification of the rules, but to stick close to the original implementation. Still there’s everything one might expect—including a personal highscore for each player, configurable keys, and a custom number of "garbage" rows on startup.

There's a great version of Tetris in the Windows Entertainment Pack, dating from Windows 3.1 days. It's not freeware, but it's widely available for download... just google for "bowep".

If you got to planetsourcecode.com there are many implementations of Tetris in VB & C++ some are precompiled. If you know any VB then you could make a 'customised' version. Tell your GF you built it for her - it may work out to your advantage!

Tetris Queen plays Queen songs in MIDI format while you play. Irritating at first, then become quite relaxing.

Of course the real answer is to get a copy of MAME and the original arcade ROM. Those dancing sprite things between levels really made the ferry ride go better. (An arcade game that made the entire trip on a single quarter also kicked arse.)

With gratitude extended to this thread, I have been hopelessly addicted to Quinn, unable to free myself from its calm and relying on it in times of need. Thank you, Mr. Rukavina, sir.

I am the one of the top tetris players!!! I need to know where to find a GOOD online tetris game as all the ones I seem to find are too easy and slow!

Anyone looking for a kick butt high score to try and beat on BOWEP tetris. Well, starting on level 8, I got 119 lines and my score was 32668!!! Don't anyone ever post their high scores on here? That's what I'm looking for! -©Papalia

I've had the BOWEP Tetris game for years, and I actually scored so high that I broke the game. Somewhere above 32,700 points, my score immediately goes negative and then counts upward from -32,700. My "highest" score is -17,815. Another glitch to my game is that it doesn't save the high scores anymore, so I have a spreadsheet to keep track of them. In case your tetris program doesn't glitch, you can still compare with lines, with my highest being 188 lines. Good luck!

188 Lines is pretty good. I can get BOWEP to glitch out and even make it back to 0 from 32768 and back about 3 times. My highest score ever was 939 lines. The highest reported so far worldwide, I believe, is 1035 lines. Contact me @ thebadomens@hotmail.com if you want to know more.

hate to boast but i got 219 lines ;)

Boast? 219 lines? 1035 lines is the highest reported? Bah. On Quinn (the os x tetris clone mentioned above) I have 8 scores better than 1000 lines, the top being 1431 lines. My 1332 line score is at a rate of 26.6 lines per minute, though my best lpm was a game with 400 or so lines, and a rate of 28.5 lpm.
On the 60 scores I have recorded, the lowest is 190 lines. Of course I've thrown away many higher scored games, by not bothering to switch to the score list that had place for them.
Lately I've been playing for tetrises. For example, the 1332 line score was 713,928 points (quinn has much higher scores per line then other clones), and I now have a 462,000 point score with 299 lines -- ie, I've tripled my score/line ratio.

Im hopelessly addicted to quinn as well...it's prevented me from doing any homework, or studying for my midterms, i just started and the best Ive done are a couple of 250+ line games over 150,000 points, level 8, 10ish lpm...someone should post a video of getting 25+ lpm, that would be insane to watch.
Last Obelus - February 18, 2005 8:30 pm
I can't play at 28 lpm anymore until I buy a new keyboard, because my space key (drop key) is sending two events every once in a while. Which means quick death.
Now my best score playing for tetris's instead of survival+speed is 810,000 points with 605 lines (at a lowly 20.7 lpm, the natural speed of the game without using drop key). I'm finding playing for tetrises much harder to master than playing for survival.
I'll try to get used to my keyboard at work enough to make a video
of playing at 28 lpm. My coworkers find it amusing.

If she uses firefox there's a nice little extension called Blockfall that's a really basic tetris clone. That's what I use...

LISTEN GUYS I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF THERES ANYONE OUT THERE WHO CAN BEAT THE 1479,223 SCORE ON TETRIS I DONT THINK SO BUT ID LOVE TO KNOW ANYWAY.
Last Obelus - March 31, 2005 1:12 am
I finally broke a million on Quinn. My tetris rate was kind of low though, only 53 tetrises.
But I did have another game of 810,000 where half of my lines filled came from tetrises.
Ambrose - April 21, 2005 3:37 pm
how do you know how many tetrises you got?, is there a way to show more detailed statistics in quinn?
Last Obelus - July 16, 2005 9:20 pm
re: how I know many tetris's
used the formula solver in a spreadsheet. For a given score + number of lines, there's usually only one or narrow range for the number of tetris's that could give that score + number of lines.
Casper - July 17, 2005 8:47 pm
I can recommend the online version of tetris called Fibris
Zack B. - July 31, 2005 2:44 am
My personal best for Tetris was 425 lines in about 34 minutes.
sjm - September 24, 2005 6:13 pm
Last Obelus, you are full of shit. post a screen shot. until then, i believe none of your scores
Steve - October 17, 2005 8:20 pm
Does Quinn have exactly the same rules in it software as the original bowep Tetris? If not then it doesn't make sense to compare scores between those two programs.
Dave Simon - October 18, 2005 11:52 pm
I used to have an System 7-era Tetris game that was called Wesleyan Tetris. It was so fun. The system would curse at you and taunt you while you played.
When you screwed up, it would say something like, "You meant to do that, RIGHT?"
Best. Tetris. Ever.

THE GAME OF TETRIS IS FOUND IN THE ' BEST OF ENTERTAINMENT PACK ' THE OFFICIAL SITE NAME IS ' BOWEP GAMES '
