The Chicken Noodle Network

I discovered two things this past weekend that are worth pointing out:

One. While playing Trivial Pursuit on Friday night¹, I discovered that CNN was once derided as the Chicken Noodle Network by other news organizations.

Two. While briefly watching CNN on Sunday, I discovered that it deserves the name. During their extended-play coverage of the whole Saddam spectacle, CNN conducted a phone-in survey asking "Should Saddam have been taken alive? Yes or No." I certainly hope I'm not the only one who found the question preposterous and a simple invitation for a bloodthirsty response.

Actually, come to think of it, calling CNN the Chicken Noodle Network is disparaging to wonderful chicken noodle soup which is both delicious and heart-warming.

¹ Yup, I'm a loser who sometimes plays Trivial Pursuit on Friday nights.

And agreed, I think that was a horrible question of CNN to ask, yet one that does not surprise me. I don't know which one makes me feel more sad for our world... the question, or my lack of "shock (and awe")?

Summary

I'm a web designer living in San Francisco, California. I sometimes get the chance to present lectures and workshops at conferences around the world, where I speak about iterative design strategies, designing for large online communities, and more broadly about interface design for web applications. I've posted many of the slides from past presentations I've done on Slideshare.

Currently, I'm the director of design at a small gaming startup called Tiny Speck. Until October 2009, I was the creative director at Digg. I was also one of the co-founders of the social content-sharing site Pownce, which is now a part (heh heh) of Six Apart. Back in 1999, I helped found silverorange, a stellar web development and design firm based in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I continue to work with silverorange, but as an inactive partner.
