Depending on your specific interests there are an incredible amount of things to occupy you during your trip. I do not live in the city but have visited many times over the years.

If you have never been before you may enjoy walking across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marin County side. There are great photographing opportunities throughout and is a great walk overall. The Alcatraz tour is nice, but the scenic boat ride there and back is great. The best views of the city (in my opinion) are from the lookout at Twin Peaks (near Castro, next to Mount Sutro and Sutro Tower).

Greasy goodness is available at Mel’s Diner, but my personal favourite in the city is Tommy’s Joynt at Geary and Van Ness. It is a strange little place but the food is to die for. There is also a great Italian restaurant called the Sausage Factory at 517 Castro.

Have a great time!

I lived there for 3 years and my daily commute included the ferry ride from Sausalito to the Ferry Terminal and back. This is a great way to see the Bay. As it's primarily for commuters, not tourists, it's pretty cheap. As a nice addition, the ferries have a full bar service. Time it right and you can watch the sunset under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Also, since we left, they have completed restoration of the beautiful Ferry Terminal Building including the addition of a new food marketplace (http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/). Far better to come and go from here, than from the much more touristy Fishermen's Wharf.

I lived in Mill Valley and am partial to the scenery of Marin. If you have a car I would suggest a drive up to the top of Mt. Tam and/or a drive out to Stinson Beach / Bolinas (these would likely consume 1/2 a day). If you do make that trip, plan on breakfast at the Coast Cafe in Bolinas or lunch or dinner at the Stinson Beach Grill.

Finally, for the coffee lovers in the group, always seek out Peet's for the best and strongest coffee you'll ever have the pleasure of sipping.

Have a great trip!!

Dan, don't forget to bring your rollerblades or rent a pair when you're in SF - and then explore Fisherman's Wharf on wheels. I did that 3 years ago and it was alot of fun. I actually went down to the Golden Gate bridge, but that was rather adventurous...

You could do a group reverse version of Brittney in Las Vegas. If I said double dare ya would it make it more likely?

If you're renting a car, go to Carmel, and maybe beyond to drive along the coast ... it's about an hour away but man, oh, man. And Carmel Beach - with Pebble Beach Golf Course looming to your right .. is amazing. Fair to middling homes. Guess which one is Clint's.

Skip the Haight Ashbury thing. The MOMA is great. I second the Alcatraz thing....anywhere down around the wharf is beautiful on a sunny day.

Hit Buchanan St. for nightlife...
Have fun.
