I'm quickly working at reducing my list of cities I've always meant to visit. Two weeks ago it was San Francisco and next week I'm heading off to New York with my girfriend for a vacation. The kindly Ian Williams and his readers have been very helpful with some great and contradicting suggestions on where to stay, what to eat, and where to go during our brief visit, but I'm still soliciting advice. (Apparently there is much debate whether or not to ever proceed above 14th Street)
My only solid plans right now are to visit several of the major art galleries and to generally peruse the landmarks. If you had three or four days in the city what would you get up to?

I would make sure to visit P.S. 1 in Queens, which is near the MoMA QNS. It's a great space (an old school, hence the name) and they have a really interesting collection.
I'd also make a point of heading into Brooklyn for an afternoon/evening. I would spend the afternoon in Williamsburg, checking out the shops, and split up your evening between Cobble Hill and Park Slope. There are some amazing dinner spots and a ton of cool shops. For dinner I'd recommend Chestnut if you wanna be a little fancy and Schnack if you're feeling frugal or if you want to eat the best french fries ever. You can cap off the evening with a movie at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) or Cobble Hill Cinemas (for $5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Oh, and if you're looking for records I'd recommend Other Music, Rocks in Your Head, Rockit Scientist or Sounds if you're looking for really cheap stuff.
If you want more specific information on anything, feel free to ask.

I was only there for 12 hours and the biggest regret I have was not being inside CBGB's.
As a tourist from PEI, I could have just walked around and people-watched for about a day alone. The architecture and hustle-bustle was worth it by itself.
Note: If a rap artist named Da Fear approaches you with his demo CD and tries to sell it to you, run. Worst 4 dollars I ever spent.

Just in case you missed it, Satan's Laundromat has posted a list of things to do in NYC.
