In a couple of days, I'm driving my twin brother and his girlfriend (and their cat, turtle, and dog) down to Chicago where they'll both be starting graduate programs at UChicago and Northwestern respectively. Incredibly, I've never before been to Chicago and I'm really looking forward to finally amending that oversight.

I was just thinking to myself the other day that a good part of my impression of the city is influenced by Wilco's music. It'll be curious to see if the real thing has the same flavour. For full effect, I'll make sure Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is playing as we pass the city limits.

I'll be in the city for a good part of the weekend and will have a bit of time to explore. I'd greatly appreciate any good suggestions for gawking, drinking, and dining. Recommendations anyone?

I love Chicago.
Make some time to take an architectural boat cruise down the river. Extremely informative - gives you a great sense of the city and you'll never look at a building the same way again.
Also be sure to visit the third floor of the Chicago Cultural Centre. It's right downtown and it's incredible.
The Tower Records on Wabash is also worth a visit.

this is probably too late to be of use, and you've probably already got it on your list -- but the Art Institute is well worth a visit.

I grew up in PEI, Canada, where I was one of the founders of silverorange. Aside from obsessing about interface design and css selectors, I'm a frequently-falling rock climber, a lazy cyclist, and an often out-of-bounds disc golfer.

Summary

I'm a web designer living in San Francisco, California. I sometimes get the chance to present lectures and workshops at conferences around the world, where I speak about iterative design strategies, designing for large online communities, and more broadly about interface design for web applications. I've posted many of the slides from past presentations I've done on Slideshare.

Currently, I'm the director of design at a small gaming startup called Tiny Speck. Until October 2009, I was the creative director at Digg. I was also one of the co-founders of the social content-sharing site Pownce, which is now a part (heh heh) of Six Apart. Back in 1999, I helped found silverorange, a stellar web development and design firm based in Prince Edward Island, Canada. I continue to work with silverorange, but as an inactive partner.
